Steve Clark’s Upcoming Visit to Northfield, Minnesota
September 8th, 2006,
I’ve been working hard to organize and promote the upcoming visit of Steve Clark to Northfield, discussed in my July 26 entry (see that entry for more on Steve also). Steve’s visit will be October 5, a week later than previously planned. He graciously agreed to change the date when a local conflict emerged. He’ll be giving a public talk at 7 pm at the Northfield High School Auditorium entitled “How Biking and Walking Will Renew the Northfield Area.” See the upcoming.org listing for more info.
Our planning team for the event consists of Bruce Anderson, Executive Director of RENew Northfield; Anne Bretts, managing editor of Northfield.org; Charlie Skinner, volunteer with RENew Northfield; and Michael Christopherson of Wishpipe Studios, who designed the beautiful flyer above. Northfield.org and the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation are co-sponsors, and we will soon have more sponsors on board.
Steve will also be joining us earlier in the day on October 5 for a Leadership Meeting with local advocates and officials. He will field questions and share some of his findings from his audit of bike and pedestrian infrastructure in our area. We hope this becomes a way for people to learn more about nonmotorized transportation and what it can offer.
In promoting the event, I came up with these benefits of increased use of nonmotorized transportation:
• reduced pollution
• improved health through greater exercise
• less need for auto infrastructure (parking, etc.)
• fairness for those who don’t have or want motorized vehicles
I’ll also include a portion of Steve’s bio here, taken from the web site of his employer, Transit for Livable Communities:
[Steve Clark] was the first manager of the bicycling and walking program in Boulder Colorado and is a past president of the League of American Bicyclists. He also oversaw development of the northern portion of the Ice Age trail in Wisconsin. In addition, Steve has written bike/pedestrian plans for many U.S. cities.
Clearly, we will be fortunate to have him here.

[...] We’re doing well in gaining publicity for the October 5 visit of bike/pedestrian expert Steve Clark to Northfield, Minnesota. The Northfield News published a nice front-page article on Saturday about it, and Northfield.org has a long post as well. [...]
