I should be funny more often, like Brendon Etter

June 13th, 2007,

I used to think I might write humor in the manner of heroes of mine such as Evelyn Waugh, Woody Allen, or Garrison Keillor. Well, somewhere along the way I read too many op-ed pieces and too much journalism and got way too serious.

However, Brendon Etter - a Northfield playwright and blogger - hasn’t forgotten how to be funny. See his blog post, If Suburbs Were Named Based on Reality.” My favorite: Dontwalkfield.

    Thanks, Bill. Truth is, I can be quite serious - moribundly so. I admire people like you who are writing serious comments outlining your convictions in a public forum. That takes courage. I do that too (in other venues), but I’m too hot-headed; so I keep it to a minimum.

    I also admire your work on non-motorized transportation in town. Though I am a runner, not a biker, I also prefer not being run over by a motorized vehicle - or even another non-motorized vehicle, unless the particular non-motorized vehicle running me over is really cute.

    On another note, I don’t know if you read this list of mine http://bleeet.blogspot.com/2007/05/convincing-arguments-politicians-use-to.html

    It was largely in response to Senator Neuville’s “Global Warming” series of posts, as you highlighted here a couple weeks back.

    Again, thanks for the compliments, and keep up the quality writing and community work. I appreciate both.

    Brendon, either I’m courageous or foolish, I don’t know which!

    Your global warming list is brilliant! Keep working that funny bone - or something like that.

    I hope we can protect pedestrians from cyclists too!

    Great stuff! I see Brandon in the bookstore a lot; I’ll have to introduce myself next time I’m there.

    How about the artificial-sounding street names in suburbs?

    Bill, I remember you once complaining about one called “Whetherbine.”

    In this vein, I put forward the following less artificial, more accurate suburban street names:

    1. Un-neighborly Way;

    2. Raccoon Run;

    3. SUV Terrace:

    4. Roadkill Ridge;

    5. Foreclosure Drive.

    Nice! I believe “Whetherbine” is in Tallahassee.
